AI is here, and photography is dead.

Sorry, I beg to differ.

The photography industry has come a long way since the first camera was invented in the year 1839 by Alphonso Giroux. With the advent of digital photography and the proliferation of smartphones, photography has become more accessible than ever before. However, despite technological advancements, many photographers still need help in making a livelihood out of their craft. Last week, I attended a talk at Southeast Asia’s most prominent centre for photography — Museo Camera at Gurugram, where the topic of discussion was AI: THE FUTURE SHOCK. The panel was led by Mr Ashish Chawla, a leading fashion photographer from India, and very experienced and senior photographers such as Mr Aditya Arya, Mr Dinesh Khanna and Mr Tarun Khiwal in the panel. The discussion revolved mainly around the impact of tools like Midjourney on professional photography as an art and profession. But AI is not only about replacing humans with machines but can also enhance human capabilities.

Enter Midjourney, an innovative AI-based tool that is revolutionising the photography industry. This powerful tool can help photographers in many ways, from improving their workflow and enhancing the quality of their images to increasing their exposure and finding new clients.

Before we take a closer look at how Midjourney is helping photographers worldwide to take their craft to the next level and explore the exciting new opportunities emerging in the industry, let’s go a little back in history to learn about Generative Artificial Intelligence.

Midjourney is one of the most recent and widespread examples of Generative AI. Generative AI is a process that uses lots of data to create something new and unique. In the 1960s, the ELIZA chatbot pretended to be a therapist, but it used a lookup table to decide what to say. In 2014, Google’s Ian Goodfellow came up with an idea called generative adversarial networks (GANs), which created low-resolution images by having two networks compete with each other. GANs improved over time but were challenging to teach and scale.

The latest diffusion combines the best parts of GANs, transformers, and physics that produce high-resolution images. It’s smaller and more open-source than the newest GPTs, which makes it a good choice for people who want to innovate.

The limitations of traditional photography tools

Traditional photography tools have been a staple in the industry for decades, but their limitations can hinder photographers from unlocking their full potential. For instance, editing a large number of photos can be time-consuming and tedious, which can take away from the creative process of photography. Additionally, traditional tools may only sometimes provide photographers with the precision and accuracy required to produce high-quality images. Another limitation of conventional photography tools is that they may not be accessible to everyone. Professional photography software, such as Adobe Photoshop, can be expensive and require extensive training to master. This can make it difficult for aspiring photographers who are just starting out in the industry to gain access to the same tools and resources as more established professionals.

However, with the advent of AI-based tools like Midjourney, these limitations are being addressed. Midjourney allows photographers to automate and simplify their editing process, reducing the time it takes to edit large numbers of photos. Its AI-powered features also provide photographers with greater precision and accuracy, making it easier to produce high-quality images. Additionally, Midjourney is a more affordable option compared to traditional photography tools, making it accessible to more people in the industry. By revolutionising how photographers work, Midjourney is opening up new opportunities for photographers to showcase their creativity and take their art to the next level.

Addressing concerns over the use of AI in photography

As with any technological advancement, there are valid concerns over using artificial intelligence (AI) in the photography industry. Some fear AI will replace human creativity and skill, while others worry about the ethical implications of using AI to manipulate images.

However, it’s worth noting that AI-based tools are not meant to replace photographers. Instead, they are designed to assist photographers in enhancing their work and providing new opportunities to express their creativity.

Moreover, AI-based tools can help photographers save time and money by automating repetitive tasks like culling and editing. This allows photographers to focus on more important aspects of their work, such as composition and storytelling.

In terms of ethical concerns, photographers must use AI-based tools responsibly and with transparency. They should disclose when and how AI-based tools were used in creating an image and avoid using them to deceive or misrepresent reality. Overall, AI-based tools are not a threat to the photography industry but rather a powerful tool that can help photographers improve their craft and create new opportunities for themselves. It’s up to us as creators to use these tools responsibly and with integrity.
